In 2019, Dr. Leonard DeFilippo and Dr. Ronald Pak arranged a meeting in Pahrump, Nevada to discuss their shared concerns about the state of psychotherapy and psychological research in Southern Nevada, which they felt fell behind the advancements seen in major cities like New York and Chicago.
Dr. DeFilippo recalled programs from his youth in New York that achieved high rates of remission with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, emphasizing recovery-focused approaches rather than the symptom-management models that dominate in Southern Nevada.
Inspired to address this gap, they developed the 'Therapy in the Desert' program, a name reflecting their mission to bring sophisticated, metropolitan city-level therapeutic approaches to this underserved Mojave desert community.
